Biographical/Historical:     Mary Douglas Buchanan and Sarah Anthony are direct descendants of the families in this collection, which were all linked through marriage prior to the 1930s. Florida Supreme Court Justice Samuel James Douglas married Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Florida's second governor Thomas Brown, in 1847. Their daughter married George Lewis, son of the founder of Lewis State Bank, in 1872. One of their daughters married John Ward Henderson, a descendant of George T. Ward who built and lived on Southwood Plantation. Their son, John Ward Henderson, Jr. married Annie Bell Anthony, a member of the Anthony family that established the Bank of Palm Beach in the early 1900s.

Summary:     This collection contains records that document several related families in the Tallahassee (the Brown, Lewis, Douglas, Henderson and Ward families) and Palm Beach (the Seward and Anthony family) areas. The materials in this collection, gathered and maintained by Mary Douglas Buchanan and Sarah Anthony during their genealogical research, provide insight into local history from Reconstruction through the Modern Era. The records document the various family histories as well as the roles of the families in the banking and investment industries, and include records from and about the Lewis State Bank, the Bank of Palm Beach, and the Anthony Investment Company. The types of records include photographs, daguerreotypes, correspondence, recollections, travel accounts, genealogies, military and bank records. Of particular interest is a memoir written by Elizabeth Brown Douglas, daughter of Thomas Brown, the second governor of Florida.
