Biographical/Historical:     The Board of Medical Examiners was established in 1881 (Chapter 3296, Laws).  It consisted of six boards operating in the separate judicial districts of the state.  The boards were headquartered at Tallahassee, Pensacola, Jacksonville, Key West, Ocala, and Tampa. The boards were authorized to conduct examinations and issue certificates of competency to physicians who qualified to practice medicine in Florida.  The board for the First Judicial Circuit at Pensacola gave its first examination on August 24-26, 1890.
Summary:     The records consist of photocopies of the ledger of the Board of Medical Examiners of and for the First Judicial District in Pensacola, Florida from 1890 to 1901.  The ledger contains the names of the physicians examined; brief biographical details concerning these men (medical school from which they graduated and location of their practice); and whether they passed or failed the examination.  It also contains a list of questions asked on the test, minutes, and financial information.
