Biographical/Historical:     William Henry Gleason (1829-1902) was a native of Wisconsin who came to Florida as a Republican politician and land speculator near the end of the Civil War. He participated in reconstruction politics and served as Lieutenant Governor to Harrison Reed from July to December 1868. Gleason's faction of the Republican Party tried to impeach Reed, and although the Senate adjourned before deciding on impeachment, Gleason declared himself acting Governor. When his faction could not convince General George M. Mead to support them with troops, the Supreme Court sided with Governor Reed and forced Gleason's removal from office. He continued to be active in Republican politics and land speculation.
