Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Military Department in 1921 (Chapter 8502, Laws of Florida). The head of the department was the Adjutant General, and its headquarters were in St. Augustine. The Military Department and the Adjutant General controlled the Florida units of the National Guard; supervised all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transported and supported any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Military Department became the Department of Military Affairs in 1973 (Ch 73-93, Laws). The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws).

Summary:     The series contains published directories of commissioned officers of the Florida National Guard, Naval Militia, and Florida State Troops. The directories document the units and officer personnel of the state's military establishment in the early twentieth century. Volume one is the only volume that lists the staff noncommissioned officers for the Florida State Troops.

The information provided on the commissioned officers includes their rank at the time of publication, date of state commissioning, date of federal commissioning, what arm or branch commissioned into (e.g. adjutant general corps, coast or field artillery, naval specialties, etc.), the positions filled by the officers of a particular unit (e.g. commanding officer, quartermaster, etc.), where the "home posts" of various units were located, and each officer's position of relative rank with the other officers of his arm/branch throughout the state as determined by date of commission.
