Biographical/Historical:     John Welborn Martin, Florida's twenty-fourth Governor (1925-1929), was born in Plainfield in Marion County on June 21, 1884. He attended school for four years, then continued his education by studying at night. Admitted to the bar in 1914, he began law practice in Jacksonville. He was Mayor of Jacksonville for three terms from 1917-1924 and returned to that city after serving as Governor.

    As Governor during a land boom that attracted national attention, Martin gave leadership to progressive endeavors that outlasted the land speculation purchases. These included the building of statewide highways, direct state appropriations for the financing of public schools, and the furnishing of free textbooks to all pupils in grades one through six.

    In 1928, Martin ran for but lost the election for United States Senator and, and then lost the 1932 gubernatorial election in a run-off against David Sholtz. Beginning in the 1940s he was co-receiver and subsequently trustee of the Florida East Coast railroad. He died in Jacksonville on February 22, 1958. Martin County, Florida is named for him.

Summary:     This collection contains photographs and papers of Florida Governor John W. Martin. Photographs include images of his family, friends, staff, and advisors. There are a few images of the Governor on his inauguration day. Family photographs include images of Black female domestic servants. Also included are images of Martin as Mayor of Jacksonville and Trustee of the Florida East Coast Railroad. There are some news clippings and telegrams that document Martin's term as governor. The collection documents Florida government and politics during the Florida boom period of the 1920s.
