The Inter-American Center Authority (Interama) was created in 1951 (Ch. 26614, Laws) as a corporate agency of the State of Florida to plan, finance, construct, operate, and maintain an Inter-American Cultural and Trade Center in Miami, Dade County, Florida. The proposed center was to be opened in 1976 as a permanent international exposition providing cultural, educational, and trade activities combining the features of an amusement park, world's fair, and trade fair. In 1975, the Authority was abolished long before the Interama project was completed (Ch. 75-131, Laws). In 1976, the Interama land, over 1000 acres in North Miami located along the Oleta River, was transferred to the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund. That same year, the Board merged with the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR), and soon leased 129 acres of the land to the DNR's Division of Recreation and Parks for use as a public recreation area. By June 1980 an additional 962 acres were leased to the Division, thereby creating the Oleta River State Recreation Area, managed as a unit of the Florida Park Service. The park's creation was slowed for several years because of the various claims and use requests upon the Interama land by private businesses, the City of Miami, and other state agencies.
The Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws) by combining the functions of the State Board of Conservation; the Canal Authority; the Commission on Marine Sciences and Technology; the Florida Keys Aqueduct Commission; the Board of Parks and Historic Memorials; the Outdoor Recreational Development Council; the Board of Drainage Commissioners; and the Suwannee River Development Authority. In 1975, the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund also became part of the Dept. of Natural Resources (Ch. 75-22, Laws). DNR was abolished in 1993 when its duties were merged with the Department of Environmental Regulation (DER) to form the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP).
Summary:
This series documents the use of the former Interama land by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) between 1975 and 1980, which resulted in the creation of Oleta River State Park. Records include land use requests, abstracts of titles, deeds, conceptual plans, agreements, newspaper clippings, and correspondence. These records document the various challenges to the land's usage and ownership, development of DNR's land management and recreation plans, and the final dissolution of the Interama project. Also of interest are several photographs that give evidence of how the park looked before DNR's assumption of ownership. Finally, the series provides information on the activities of the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund, the Division of Recreation and Parks, and of the City of Miami.
