Biographical/Historical:     The Carrabelle, Tallahassee, and Georgia Railroad Company was founded on January 5, 1891 by the Georgia and Florida Investment Company of New York and Paisley, Scotland, for the purpose of building a railroad from Carrabelle on the Gulf of Mexico northward through Tallahassee, and connecting to Thomasville, Georgia.  The Carrabelle, Tallahassee and Georgia Railroad Company purchased the rights, franchises, and property of the Augusta, Tallahassee, and Gulf Railroad, a corporation that had been organized several years before for a similar purpose but failed to complete the railroad.  The Carrabelle, Tallahassee and Georgia Railroad Company also established contracts for the transportation of 100,000 feet of timber daily for a period of years.  The first two estimates produced for the company incorrectly stated that the Railroad had access to over 550,000,000 feet of Yellow Pine Timber Land. A final report shows that there were approximately 100,000,000 feet of Yellow Pine Timber Land.
Summary:     This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, and reports of the Carrabelle, Tallahassee, and Georgia Railroad Company.  These records document the expansion of the railroad system in the Tallahassee and Carrabelle areas and reflect the problems that this company faced in establishing the railroad as well as their development of other businesses in the area, including lumber and fishing businesses.
