Biographical/Historical:     The Governor is the Chief Executive Officer of the state and as such is commander-in-chief of the state militia, signs all commissions for state and county officers, fills hundreds of state and county offices by appointment and has the power of suspension over state and county officers. The Governor is also chief planning and budgeting officer for the state, has veto power over legislative acts, can call special sessions of the Legislature and can call for adjournment if the Legislature cannot agree upon a time.

Summary:     Appointment files document the governor's power to make appointments to various offices, boards, and committees. Many of these files document appointments made to boards and commissions that were subsquently abolished or became inactive, or for which membership became elective rather than appointive, as well as for still-active commissions.

The files consist primarily of correspondence concerning candidates, including letters of endorsement indicating candidates' qualifications and sometimes their political affiliations; letters from potential candidates expressing interest in being appointed to vacancies; candidates' appointment applications; and reports of board membership and demographics, listing name, address, county, age, occupation, sex and race for each board member.
