Biographical/Historical:     Born in New York City in 1931, George Firestone came to Florida as a boy with his family to settle in Miami.  Firestone served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1952.  He then went into business in Miami and became a leader in many civic organizations.
    In 1966, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives from Dade and Monroe Counties, where he served until election to the State Senate in 1972.  He left the Senate in 1974.  In 1978, he was elected Secretary of State.  He served in this position until he resigned in 1987.
Summary:     The series consists of Secretary of State George Firestone's reading files pertaining mainly to the programs of the Department of State from 1979 to 1987.  Included in the series is outgoing correspondence of the Secretary, both of a business and personal nature.  Some letters were written by staff.  There is a gap in the series from January 1980 to May 1981.
