Biographical/Historical:     William H. Gleason was a native of Wisconsin who came to Florida as a Republican politician and land speculator near the end of the Civil War. He participated in reconstruction politics and served as Lieutenant Governor to Harrison Reed from July to December 1868. Gleason's faction of the Republican Party tried to impeach Reed. The Senate adjourned before deciding on impeachment, but Gleason declared himself acting Governor. When his faction could not convince General George M. Mead to support them with troops, the Supreme Court sided with Governor Reed and forced Gleason's removal from office. He continued to be active in Republican politics and land speculation.

In 1869 Francis Vose sued the Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund for the Trustees' recognition of Vose as the owner of mature bonds funded by the sale of state lands controlled by the Fund. These bonds had secured debt that was incurred prior to the Civil War by various entities constructing internal improvements, e.g. railroads. These entities had defaulted due to the dislocations created by the war.

Summary:     This single-item collection contains a letter describing a proposed deal between William H. Gleason and Francis Vose. This deal was contingent upon certain actions occurring from Vose's suit against the Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund.
