Biographical/Historical:     The federal government created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1935 as part of a massive work-relief program -- known as the New Deal -- to combat the Great Depression. Employing over 8.5 million out of work people before its dissolution in 1943, the WPA participated in hundreds of national, state, and local projects that included published works, art projects, theatre, conservation and construction projects, and education. In 1939, the WPA changed its name to Works Projects Administration.

Summary:     This collection contains transcriptions of the minutes of the commissioners of some Florida counties done by the Works Progress Administration. The collection also includes a transcription of the city of Saint Augustine aldermen/commissioners' minutes and ordinances. The minutes document who held office, the cost of government, and decisions made in the formation of county and city ordinances. Most of the information is presented in an abbreviated form giving only the decisions or actions taken.

Participants in the WPA's historical records survey transcribed the minutes. The materials in the collection do not include typescripts from all counties or all time periods. There is a folder containing some WPA administrative narrative concerning the project following the Saint Augustine material in Box 3.
