Biographical/Historical:     Fort Clinch is a coastal fort on Amelia Island in Nassau County, Florida. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the fort in 1847 and named it in honor of Brevet Brigadier General Duncan L. Clinch after his death in 1849. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Florida troops seized the fort and Confederate forces held it until March of 1863 when federal troops returned and garrisoned it until the close of the war. The fort saw some auxiliary use during the Spanish-American War and was sold in March of 1929.

Summary:     The collection contains microfiche copies of architectural drawings of Fort Clinch. The drawings provide the plan and engineering basis that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers followed in construction of the fort. Also included are illustrations of the range and sighting charts provided for the fort's complement of guns. There are also maps showing the fort's relation to Fernandina, Amelia Island's location, and the fort's relation to the mouth of the inlet.
