Biographical/Historical:     Leonard F. Chapman was born on September 8, 1884, in Phoenix, Arizona. He moved to Florida around 1911 and began working in the citrus industry at DeLand. He won election to represent Volusia County in the 1931 Legislature. That same year Chapman accepted the position of superintendent of the Florida State Prison, a position he maintained for 25 years. He immediately embarked upon a system of prison reforms including replacement of obsolete buildings, sanitation improvements, prisoner education and behavior modification. He retired from public service in 1956.

Summary:     The collection contains the papers of Leonard F. Chapman, Superintendent of the Florida State Prison. The collection includes a manuscript, titled "The Florida Prison...and I," written by Chapman about his career at the Florida State Prison. This manuscript contains a chapter with a transcript of the personal diary of Joseph Zangara while he was at the Florida State Prison. Most of the collection consists of scrapbooks of newspapers clippings from 1933 to 1956 written about Chapman or the Prison. In addition, there are numerous photographs depicting prison life from the 1930s to the 1950s. Another scrapbook maintained by Chapman contains a combination of photographs, newspaper clippings, and writings.
