Biographical/Historical:     The Methodist Episcopal Church, South was the Methodist denomination resulting from a split over the issue of slavery that divided the churches of the North and South in 1844. During Reconstruction, northern Methodist churches sent missionaries to the South and the church began to flourish in Florida; there were then both North and South Methodist conferences in Florida. In 1939, the two regional denominations reunified as the Methodist Church.

The Leon Circuit was part of the Tallahassee District of the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. It originally covered Leon (except Tallahassee), Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla counties.

Summary:     The collection contains the microfilmed minutes of the Leon Circuit quarterly conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The church held its conference at alternating locations to report the activities of each church. Using a standard format, the minutes contain information about who was present at the meeting; appeals or complaints; the amount of money raised in support of the ministry; miscellaneous business raised; applications for licenses to preach; general state of the churches; and the state of Sunday school and pastoral instruction of children.

In some instances, the records contain the names of individuals who have joined the church, left the church, or died within the reporting period. There are also a few tributes of respect for pastors or members who have died.
