Biographical/Historical:     Henry Edward Partridge (1850-1936) was born on his father's plantation near Lake Miccosukee (Jefferson County), Florida. He was the thirteenth child of John Nathaniel (d.1851) and Eliza Lavinia Waring Partridge. In 1853, Partridge moved with his mother to Monticello, Florida, where he spent his childhood. Partridge graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1870. In 1873, he married Sarah A. (Sallie) Nelson.

Partridge served in pastorates in the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, from 1872 to 1928. He was minister of numerous Methodist churches, throughout the entire state of Florida. Normally, he served a new church every two years. He also served in the Mississippi Conference from 1893 to 1897, stationed near Natchez.

Summary:     This collection consists of a diary of Henry Edward Partridge. The diary begins as a reminiscence, 1850-1870, describing Partridge's childhood years up through his college days. The diary then assumes the daily entry form, from 1873 to 1888. At the end are fragments dated 1895.

The diary contains descriptions of Partridge's travels throughout Florida and Mississippi. It presents Partridge's commentaries on the social and economic life of the times and information about his family, friends, and the different churches he pastored. It also details Partridge's experiences with the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, providing a description of its early beginnings.
