Biographical/Historical:     Lewis G. Schmidt (1931-2016) was a historian and prolific author. His primary area of study was the American Civil War. His numerous works on the Civil War include "The Civil War in Florida: A Military History," published in 1989 in four volumes.

Summary:     This collection consists of research materials accumulated by Lewis G. Schmidt, author of "The Civil War in Florida: A Military History." The materials include photocopies of newspaper clippings; Civil War soldiers' diaries, memoirs, and letters; and maps and illustrations. These records document military operations throughout the state, including those at Pensacola, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Fernandina, Key West, and Ft. Jefferson. The records also include information on the naval blockade of Florida and the battles of Santa Rosa Island, Olustee, Marianna, and Natural Bridge.
