Biographical/Historical:     The Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was a prohibitionist and philanthropic organization active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Founded in 1894, its members lobbied for the adoption of a Constitutional amendment outlawing the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Their efforts culminated in 1919 with the adoption of the Eighteenth Amendment that established the prohibition of alcohol in the United States.

    Several WCTU chapters were active in Florida. One chapter, the Magdalene Union, organized in Tampa in 1905 with Etta Mendenhall serving as president. The chapter later changed its name to the Mendenhall Union in honor of their first president. In 1922, the chapter sponsored the opening of one of the earliest day care centers in Tampa.

Summary:     This collection contains records of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union chapter in Tampa, Florida. The records include an account book, dated 1905-1922, and a minute book, dated 1905-1909, that detail the various actions of the chapter. The collection also includes few miscellaneous receipts and letters.
