Biographical/Historical:     Daniel Thomas McCarty, Florida's 31st governor, was born in Fort Pierce on January 18, 1912, as the eldest son of Daniel Thomas and Frances (Moore) McCarty. He attended the public schools of his native St. Lucie County and the University of Florida, where he graduated in 1934 from the College of Agriculture. A citrus grower and beef cattleman in Fort Pierce, McCarty served in the Florida House for three sessions (1937, 1939, 1941), serving as Speaker of the House in 1941. He served in World War II, landing in the south of France for Operation Dragoon with the Seventh Army in August 1944 and was honored with the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and French Croix de Guerre. He was runner-up for the Democratic nomination for governor in 1948 before being elected to the position in 1952. McCarty celebrated his inauguration on January 2, 1953, suffered a disabling heart attack on February 25, 1953, and died September on 28, 1953 in Tallahassee.

Summary:     The collection consists of a scrapbook of materials relating to Florida Governor Dan McCarty. His driver, Joe Cook of Tallahassee, compiled the scrapbook. The collection contains photographs (primarily black and white), a map of the Governor's Inaugural Procession, and three pamphlets. The photographs include gubernatorial events, such as McCarty's campaign and inauguration, as well as informal family shots. The pamphlets include his funeral program, an automobile list from his funeral procession, and a program from the dedication of the Dan McCarty Memorial Highway.
