Biographical/Historical:     F. Arlie Rhodes, a native of Woodville, Florida, was a prominent educator in Florida and Mississippi.  He received his doctorate degree from the University of Florida in school administration, and took post-doctoral workin school finance at Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve (1942-1946), spending 20 months of active service in the South Pacific.
    Rhodes served as Leon County Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1937-1945; specialist, Florida Dept. of Education, 1951-1960; professor, Florida State University, 1954-1961; dean, College of Education, Mississippi State University, 1961-1970; administrator, Florida Public School Council, 1970-1971; and director, Florida Dept. of Education, 1971-1972.
    In additional to his distinguished career in education, Rhodes was an active community leader particularly interested in local history.  He was also a leader in the Catholic community.  He was a parishioner of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and helped establish the St. Stephen Catholic Mission in Woodville.  He died in Tallahassee in 1988.
Summary:     The papers consist of correspondence, photographs, genealogical materials, newspaper clippings, cassette recordings, and other miscellaneous items.  The genealogical materials relate primarily to the Rhodes family and the allied families of Hatch, Woodhouse, and Moody.  The Rhodes family is documented to ancestors from the Revolutionary War.  There are letters and items covering Rhodes' experience in World War II.  Other materials include papers related to Rhodes' election for Superintendent of Public Instruction of Leon County; his personal correspondence, 1950-1970; and his administrative files of the Florida Public School Council, 1970-1971.
    The cassettes are recordings of talks Rhodes gave while teaching local Leon County history in the community.  The topics covered are:  San Luis Mission; History of the Tallahassee Democrat; Florida Women Get the Right to Vote; Early Tallahassee Chaires Family; Planter Family in Florida's Apalachee Region; Judge Augustus Woodward; Woodville Churches; and Leon County Public School System.
