Biographical/Historical:     Don Fuqua was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on August 20, 1933. When he was four years old the Fuqua family moved to Altha in Calhoun County, Florida. Fuqua attended the University of Florida (UF) from 1951 to 1953 and served in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1953 to 1955 with a portion of that service in the Korean War. He returned to UF and after graduating in 1957 engaged in the agriculture and dairy businesses.

    From 1958 to 1962 Fuqua served in the Florida House of Representatives from Calhoun County. He then won election to represent the 2nd District of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1963 and remained in the House until his retirement from public service in 1987. He was appointed early in his Congressional career to the House Science and Technology Committee and became its chairman in 1979. He also served on the Government Operations Committee. Upon leaving Congress in 1987, Fuqua became president of Aerospace Industries Association.

Summary:     The collection contains Don Fuqua's papers that document his entire career as a Congressman in Washington, D.C. General Subject Files make up the bulk of the collection with most documents being correspondence to the Representative and his response. Legislative Files contain copies of the various bills that Fuqua was interested in and may contain some correspondence with other members of Congress or constituents. Political Campaign files contain correspondence, reports, invitations, and bank records dealing with the various elections from 1963-1986. County Files contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other sources of information pertaining to the counties that make up the 2nd Congressional district.

    Projects and Establishment files are subject, correspondence and technical files covering various activities of government agencies that run projects in the 2nd district. The Post Office Files are like the project files but deal only with postal matters or post offices. Public Relations Files contain press releases, questionnaires, newsletters, and scripts for radio or television advertisements. Personal Files contain statements/speeches, position papers and views, autographs/photographs, records of contributions made and declined, records of gifts given and received, and material concerning Killearn Properties in Tallahassee. Photographs, Scrapbooks and Memorabilia contain materials depicting Fuqua's career and interests from the beginning to the end.
