Biographical/Historical:     Reubin O'Donovan Askew was the thirty-seventh Governor of Florida, serving from 1971 to 1979. He served in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate before his election as governor in 1970, defeating incumbent Claude Kirk. Askew was reelected in 1974, becoming the first governor in state history to be elected for a second successive full term.

    Askew was primarily involved in tax reform, especially in the increase of homestead exemption, and passage of the "Sunshine Amendment" that called for full financial disclosure by public officials and candidates. Askew ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984.
Summary:     The collection contains the 1984 presidential campaign papers of Reubin O'D. Askew. The records include speeches, newspaper clippings, scheduling files, reference materials, briefing materials, correspondence, publicity video tapes and cassettes, interviews (on cassette tapes), campaign memorabilia, and campaign financial records that include a master file of contributions on magnetic tape. Some materials, particularly speech files, pre-date 1980.
