Biographical/Historical:     David Sholtz was born on October 6, 1891, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Yale University in 1914 and received his law degree from Stetson University in 1915. He served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War I. After the war, he settled in Florida, where he became a lawyer and businessman in Daytona Beach. He represented Volusia County in the Florida House of Representatives in 1917, served as State Attorney from 1919 to 1921, and was City Judge in 1921.

    Sholtz won the election for Governor of Florida in 1933.During his term, Sholtz implemented statewide social welfare programs for unemployment compensation, old age assistance, and temporary relief available through Roosevelt's New Deal programs. He also promoted governmental reorganization. After leaving office, he practiced law in Miami and spent time in New York City. He died in the Florida Keys on March 21, 1953.

Summary:     This collection contains copies of various cases against David Sholtz filed in the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, Volusia County, all filed prior to Sholtz's election as Governor of Florida. The collection also includes copies of Sholtz's birth certificate and a statement by the Deputy Tax Collector for Volusia County.
