Biographical/Historical:     The Hughes family lived intermittently in South Georgia and North Florida, as did the Jarratt family. James A. Jarratt married the sister of Kate C. Hughes. Kate C. Hughes never married.

Summary:     The collection contains the diaries of Kate C. Hughes (1884 and 1889) and that of her brother-in-law, James A. Jarratt (from 1848). Hughes' diaries describe mid-19th century life from a woman's perspective, as well as her very active spiritual life and bible study. Jarratt's diary provides a thorough depiction of life on a farm during this time, and records crops planted, agricultural methods, health concerns and social activities. Also included in the collection are Jarratt's 1848 account book and his 1836 mathematics notebook, some textbooks, photographs and a December 17, 1880, letter from S. P. Myrick to Samuel H. Hughes. Most of the photographs are unidentified and include ambrotypes, tintypes and daguerreotypes.
