Summary:     The collection contains the diaries (1884 and 1889) of Kate C. Hughes and that of her brother-in-law, James A. Jarratt (from 1848). Also included is Jarratt's 1848 account book.  Hughes' diaries describe mid-19th century life from a woman's perspective, as well as her very active spiritual life and bible study.  Jarratt's diary provides an accurate description of life on a farm during this time, and records crops planted, agricultural methods, health concerns, and social life.  The rest of the collection consists of an 1836 mathematics notebook of Jarratt's, some textbooks, photographs, and a December 17, 1880 letter from S. P. Myrick to Samuel H. Hughes. Most of the photographs are unidentified and include ambrotypes, tintypes, and daguerreotypes.
