The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:   The Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws of Florida) by merging several state agencies into one Department.  It was responsible for providing health, social, economic, family, and rehabilitative services to citizens in need. It was reorganized in 1975 (Ch. 75-48, Laws), changing its divisions into program offices responsible for providing program planning, monitoring, evaluation, and technical assistance to the state's eleven districts.  The Department was renamed the Department of Children and Family Services (known as the Department  of Children and Families) effective January 1997 (Ch. 96-403, Laws), and its functions relating to public and environmental health matters and children's medical services were transferred to the new Department of Health.
Summary:     The series contains research notes relating to the development of social services in Florida.  The notes were gathered for inclusion in a report on social services by Will Adler for the Dept. of Health and Rehabilitative Services.  The series includes subject files on people interviewed and topics directed toward workers and clients.  It also includes taped interviews with people reflecting their personal experiences in the social service field in Florida.  They are:  Dr. Joanna Gorman, Ms. Nancy (Calhoun) Freeman, Dr. Victoria Warner, Margaret Quimby, and Lola O'Dea.
