Biographical/Historical:     A lifelong resident of Tallahassee, Nettie Clare Bowen was known for her activism in civic and political affairs. Her name appeared on a suit that went to the state Supreme Court to save the live oak trees lining North Calhoun Street. She lived in the historic, two-story white frame house on the southeast corner of Calhoun and Virginia Streets. The house is an early prefabricated structure shipped from New York to New Orleans to St. Marks, and then brought by a team of oxen to Tallahassee.

Summary:     The collection contains an interview with Nettie Clare Bowen by Clifton Paisley on April 22, 1972. In the interview, Bowen discusses the history of the buildings and families in the area that is presently the Calhoun Street Historic District in Tallahassee, Florida. The records include a taped interview and transcript. Bowen also discusses growing up on North Calhoun Street in the early twentieth century.
