In 1898, Caroline Mays Brevard organized the Anna Jackson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Tallahassee and became its first president. Brevard formed the organization as a benevolent society to commemorate and assist Confederate veterans and their families. Today it supports educational programs on the Civil War, collects historical documents of Confederate veterans, participates in battle reenactments, decorates Confederate soldiers' graves, and provides scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.
Summary:
Records of the Anna Jackson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy include correspondence, minutes, organizational papers, subject files, programs, membership lists and yearbooks. In addition, the collection contains some records of the Clara Ryder Hayden Chapter, also in Tallahassee, from 1930 to 1934. There are also miscellaneous items, publications, photographs and scrapbooks pertaining to the United Daughters of the Confederacy or the Civil War.
The collection contains some original Civil War material such as an 1862 diary of David E. Coombs, 9th Maine Infantry, describing operations around Charleston, S.C.; an 1862 letter from Evander L. Fletcher, 2nd Florida Infantry Battalion, at Camp Finegan near Jacksonville; an 1863 letter from Captain J.T. Bernard, 8th Florida Infantry Regiment, requesting a leave of absence; and a journal by John David Cay written while he was prisoner at Pt. Lookout in Delaware, from 1864 to 1865.
The post-war correspondence related to veterans includes a 1906 letter from D.M. Pogue, 2nd Florida Infantry, to Governor Fleming describing the unit's battle flag and its loss at the Battle of Gettysburg; a 1901 letter from John Jenkins, 3rd South Carolina Cavalry, to Adjutant General Houstoun with copies of two wartime reports regarding action on Johns Island, South Carolina, in November 1863; a 1902 letter from Washington Mackay Ives, 4th Florida Infantry, to Governor Fleming concerning the battle flag of the First and Fourth Consolidated Florida Regiment; an undated letter by Richard C. Long, 5th Florida Cavalry Battalion, recounting his military service; and an undated letter by J.D. Cox, 5th Georgia Cavalry, giving a summary of his service.
