Biographical/Historical:     George W. Messer was born in Georgia in 1839. Sometime before the Civil War, he moved with his family to Dellwood, Florida in Jackson County. He later served as a private in Company D of the 17th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteers during the Civil War, also called the Decatur Guards. He died in 1925 and is buried in Dellwood Cemetery.

Summary:     This collection contains the personal papers of George W. Messer, most of which relate to his service in the Civil War. It includes a certification of his membership in the Decatur Guards and a letter, both from Judge J. H. Martin; a muster roll of the Decatur Guards; and a recorded copy of his parole from the Army of Northern Virginia dated April 10, 1865 and certified by W. A. McRae, clerk of the Circuit Court of Jackson County.
