Biographical/Historical:     Frederick Cotten (1819-1878) was an enslaver in Leon County, Florida and operated the Burgesstown Plantation with his wife, Elizabeth Coffield Cotten (born 1830). Burgesstown was one of the largest cotton plantations in Leon County at the time, with 51 recorded enslaved Black persons - 20 men, 8 women and 23 children - in 1850.

Summary:     The collection contains the papers of the Cotten family of Leon County, Florida from 1840 to 1925. Items include receipts for the sale of cotton, a receipt for the purchase of an unnamed 44-year-old enslaved person, a quitclaim deed of Elizabeth C. Cotten, an annual return of Frederick Cotten as testamentary guardian to the estate of his brother, John W. Cotten, and a description of a plat of land owned by J. Markhill. The collection also contains four cancelled checks belonging to Helen M. Edwards of Monticello.
