Biographical/Historical:     Green A. Chaires belonged to the prominent Chaires family of Leon County. Born in 1827, he was the son of Green Hill and Hannah Hathaway Chaires. Green A. established Evergreen Hills Plantation, an expansive cotton farm west of Tallahassee and he became one of the county's most successful cotton growers. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Green A. Chaires died in 1902.

Summary:     The collection contains Green A. Chaires' pardon and amnesty for participation in the Civil War, signed by President Andrew Johnson and dated September 7, 1865. The collection also includes an 1866 letter to Chaires in Tallahassee from Jefferson Davis, in prison at Fort Monroe, Virginia, thanking Chaires for his offer to send Davis money for his comfort.
