Biographical/Historical:     The County Court for Jefferson County was established by an act of the Territorial Legislature on January 19, 1827.  The court originally met on the first Mondays of February and September, and two additional sessions each year for probate matters.  The county courts exercise original jurisdiction over all sums above twenty and under one hundred dollars, and appellate jurisdiction over the judgments of justices of the peace, and concurrent jurisdiction in all civil cases above one hundred dollars with the superior court. Any appeals arising out of the County Court were referred to the Superior Court.
Summary:     The series contains the files of cases heard before the County Court of Jefferson County from 1827 to approximately 1920.  The files contain complaints; summons; petitions; orders; depositions and affidavits; decrees, verdicts and judgments rendered; and bills of costs.  Other Jefferson County court records may be found in series L346 Miscellaneous court records.
