Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislative Council created Leon County on December 29, 1824, from the eastern half of Gadsden County. When the Legislative Council created Wakulla County in 1843, the southern boundary of Leon County moved north. The boundary between Leon County and Jefferson County was redrawn several times (1829, 1831, 1832, and 1881) before it became permanent. The Clerk of the Circuit Court in each county serves as the official custodian of deed, marriage, and probate records.
Summary:     This series consists of the estate inventories and appraisements filed at the County Court of Leon County in the latter half of the 19th century. The series includes one original record book (Book C, 1853-1872) with a microfilm copy, and another volume on microfilm only (Book D, 1872-1894). Both volumes contain an index. The appraisements include real estate, personal property, promissory notes, and other items of value belonging to decedents at the time of their deaths. The estate inventories of enslavers include lists of the people they enslaved identified by name and assessed value, with some inventories including additional information, such as age, sex, and familial relationships. In some cases, enslaved people are referred to as servants.
