Biographical/Historical:     Leon County was created by an act of the Legislative Council of Florida on December 29, 1824 (Laws).  It was formed from the eastern half of Gadsden County. The boundaries of Leon County underwent several changes through out the years.  When Wakulla County was created in 1843, the southern boundary of Leon County was changed. The boundary between Leon County and Jefferson County was altered several times (1829, 1831, 1832 and 1881) before it became permanent.      The Superior Court of the Middle District of Floirda held its first term in Leon County on December 7, 1825.  TheSuperior Courts had jurisdiction in all criminal cases and exclusive jurisdiction in all capital cases and original jurisdiction in all civil cases of the value of one hundred dollars.  Any appeals arising out of the Superior Courts decisions were referred to the Territorial Court of Appeals.  When Florida became a state in 1845, the Superior Courts were abolished and any pending cases were transferred to the respective Circuit Court of that county.
Summary:     This series consists of microfilm copies of Superior Court and Circuit Court minutes for Leon County, Florida, from 1824 to 1887. The minutes consist of a record of the proceedings of the two courts.  Many instruments are copied verbatim into the minutes, including motions, orders, judgements, and writs.  Most of the volumes contain an index.
