The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Organization/Arrangement: Divided into two groups, arranged by discharge or death dates: (1) 1914-1938 and (2) post 1938.  The first group is subdivided into (1) black females, (2) black males, (3) white females, and (4) white males.
Restrictions: **RESTRICTED**Records restricted per s. 394.4615, F.S. and will be open for inspection 50 years from date of creation per 257.38(2), F.S.

Per the Assistant General Counsel for the Department of Children and Families (email 1/19/2012), names of civil patients in files under 50 years old are confidential, but not names of forensic patients, based on language differences in the various statutes that apply.  Since the Archives is unable to distinguish between civil and forensic patients for many or most files, we will treat all as confidential.

Summary:     The series contains medical records from 1914 to 1983 of patients who died while hospitalized or were discharged from the Florida State Hospital and its predecessor, the Florida Hospital for the Insane.  The post-1938 records are sample cases of selected medical records.  The medical records contain charts; admission, furlough and discharge papers; progress notes; death certificates; and other information which pertains to the patient's hospitalization.
