Summary:     This series consists of the homestead applications submitted to the State Land Office from 1881 to 1905.  In accordance with the Florida homestead laws of 1881, homesteaders were required to file applications to obtain the right to purchase the lands they occupied (1881, Ch. 3324, Laws).  The applications consist of sworn affidavits by settlers testifying to their settlement, cultivation, and improvement of public lands for a period of over three years. The application includes the applicant name, lot size, location, and land improvements.  The records also include applications by railroad and canal companies to purchase lands designated for internal improvements.
