Biographical/Historical:     The Canal Authority of the State of Florida was created by the Legislature in 1933 (Ch. 16176, Laws).  Its purpose was to acquire the land and equipment necessary to build and operate a shipping canal across the peninsula of Florida.  A connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico had long been a goal of Florida's industrial and agricultural interests.  Work was begun on the canal as a feature of New Deal programs in Florida.  The Canal Authority of the State of Florida was transferred to the Dept. of Natural Resources in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws).
Summary:     This series consists of registers maintained by Herman Ulmer acting as the general counsel for the Canal Authority of the State of Florida.  The registers contain information regarding the acquisition of tracts of land for the right of way for the cross-state shipping canal that was known later as the Cross Florida Barge Canal.  The first register contains information on tracts of land acquired through purchase negotiations.  The other registers contain information on tracts of land that were condemned through the use of eminent domain suits.  The legal description of each tract is entered in the registers.
