Biographical/Historical:     The first institution for higher education in Tallahassee, Florida was chartered in 1851 and has been state-assisted since 1857.  In 1905, it was designated as the female seminary in Florida and was named the Florida Female College (Ch. 5384, Laws).  Its name was changed to Florida State College for Women in 1909 (Ch. 5961, Laws).  In 1947, the name was changed to Florida State University and the institution was made coeducational.
    Edward Conradi was President of the Florida State College for Women from 1909 until his retirement in 1941.  Conradi was born at New Bremen, Ohio on February 20, 1869.  He received his A.B. and A.M degrees from Indiana University and his Ph.D. degree at Clark University in Massachusetts in 1904.  He came to the Florida State College for Women four years after it was established as the state's institution of higher learning for women.  He directed its growth from a few hundred students to an enrollment in excess of 2,000. After his retirement, Dr. Conradi was appointed President Emeritus and remained active in an advisory capacity until his death on December 1, 1944.
Summary:     The series contains the administrative files for Florida State College for Women President Edward Conradi from 1939 to 1941.  The records consist of mostly correspondence, along with some reports. The series is incomplete.  It contains only files A - J for 1939-1941; the earlier administrative files, 1909-1939, are missing.  It documents the Dr. Conradi's interactions with his administrative staff, university faculty, and the Board of Control.
