Biographical/Historical:     In 1965, the Board of Regents assumed the duties of the Board of Control, which had been in existence since 1905 (Chapter 63-204; Ch. 65-138, Laws of Florida). The Board of Regents was a corporate entity holding all the powers of a body corporate and electing a corporate secretary. Its Regents were the Commissioner of Education plus twelve members appointed by the Governor. The Board acted as the Director of the Division of Universities in the Department of Education (Ch. 69-106, Laws). The Board appointed the Chancellor, who was chief administrative officer for the Board of Regents and the State University System of Florida.

The Board of Regents established the policies, rules, and regulations for the universities in the State University System of Florida. The Board monitored the fiscal matters of the universities, approved instructional and degree programs, coordinated program development among the state universities, and planned for future needs of the State University System. The State Legislature abolished the Board of Regents in 2001, transferring its functions to the Florida Board of Education (Chapter 2001-170, Laws of Florida, SB 1162, Florida Statutes Chapter 229.0072(4)(o)).

Summary:     This series contains the minutes of the regular and special meetings of the Board of Control (1905-1964) and the Board of Regents (1965-2001). The minutes reflect the Board's primary responsibility of setting policy and procedure for Florida's state universities and colleges. The series contains information on university personnel, such as appointments, resignations, and tenure and information on students, including appointment of student assistants, awarding of scholarships, and lists of graduates.

In addition, the minutes contain information on the University of Florida's Agricultural Experiment Station and Agricultural Extension Service. The minutes also reflect the Board's brief administrative duties for the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind and the Ringling Museum of Art.
