Biographical/Historical Note:     State censuses were compiled in 1845 and every ten years after (Article IX, Sections 1, 2, 1838, 1861, 1865 Constitutions; Article XIII, Section 1, 1868 Constitution; Article VII, Section 5, 1885 Constitution).  The state census was abolished in 1949 (Senate Joint Resolution #46, 1949).  The federal census has therefore served as Florida's census record since 1950.
The state census supplemented the federal census carried out at the end of each decade (1840, 1850, etc.).  The state census was used for the determination of legislative electoral districts.  The constitutions gave the authority to call for a census to the Legislature, which in turn, by individual acts, delegated the enumeration responsibilities to the Secretary of State and the Commissioner of Agriculture.
