The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical Note:     The post of Superintendent of Common Schools for Freedmen was created in 1866 (Ch. 1475, Laws) to administer the common schools for freedmen.  The Governor appointed the Superintendent who in turn appointed assistant superintendents or requested that the county commission appoint an assistant superintendent for the county.  The common schools were funded by a tax on male "persons of color" between the ages of 25 and 50.  The post was abolished in 1868 with the creation of the post of Superintendent of Public Instruction, who was responsible for administering all state schools.
