The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     The Florida High Technology and Industry Council was created by the Legislature (Ch. 83-326, Laws) to promote development of high technology in order to diversify the state economy.  The Council was an independent board; initially it relied on the Office of the Governor for budget and staff purposes, but in 1992 the Legislature transferred it to the Dept. of Commerce (Ch. 92-111).      The promotion of high technology in Florida industry wasaccomplished by the Council through the joint efforts of the Dept. of Education and public and private postsecondary/vocational educational institutions, the Executive Office of the Governor, the Dept. of Commerce, other executive agencies, and leaders in high technology business and industry.  The High Tech Council hostedconferences focusing on high tech issues; assembled networks of leading business-people, scientists and academics to pursue such issues; published reports and working papers on relevant topics; and implemented the statewide program of Centers of Electronic Emphasis and Electronic Specialization.  The Council also coordinated the Applied Research Grants Program, a university-based grants program designed to support the development and application of advanced technology initiatives.  The Council was abolished and its functions transfered to the Dept. of Commerce and a not for profit entity of the new Enterprise Florida Innovation Partnership (Ch. 93-187).
Summary:     This series consists of the records of the Florida High Technology and Industry Council for the period 1982 to 1993.  The records include general administrative and subject files, meeting files, Applied Research Grant files, project files, correspondence of the Executive Director, Council reports and publications, and videotapes.  Subject matter includes robotics, supercomputers, the strategic defense initiative, vocational and technical education, Florida Centers of Electronic Emphasis, the superconducting super collider, and other issues related to high technology.
