Biographical/Historical:     Lawton Mainor Chiles, the forty-first Governor of Florida, began his gubernatorial term in 1991 after defeating incumbent Governor Bob Martinez. Chiles served in the State House (1959-1966) and Senate (1966-1970). Prior to being elected Governor, he had served in the United States Senate from 1970 to 1989. Chiles died in December 1998, shortly before completing his second term as Governor.

Summary:     This series documents the State's response to Hurricane Andrew after it made landfall as a Category 5 storm on Elliott Key and Homestead on August 24, 1992. The inclusion of several coordinated efforts between local, state, and federal government organizations as well as private business defines how large and unprecedented the recovery effort was. Issues recorded in the records include subjects such as: property insurance, homelessness, public schools, federal funding, tax relief, tax redirection, contractor fraud, and looting.
