The Apalachicola Northern Railroad (AN) was a short-line railroad in the Florida Panhandle. It owned and operated a 96-mile railroad between Port St. Joe and Chattahoochee with a short spur to Apalachicola. The company chartered on April 7, 1903, construction on the railway began on March 21, 1905, and trains began running in 1907. The Apalachicola Northern Railroad operated until 2002 when its largest corporate investor, the St. Joe Paper Company, leased the line to AN Railway.
Summary:
This collection consists of one leather-bound photo album containing approximately 226 (3.5 x 4.5) photographic prints. The photos document the building of portions of the Apalachicola Northern Railroad. Photo locations include Apalachicola, the Apalachicola River, St. Josephs Bay, Eastpoint, Estiffanulga, St. Marks, and Jacksonville. Other notable locations include Fort Gadsden Creek, Owl Creek, Lake Chipley Creek, Trout Hole, Dead Lakes, and the Gregory House at Ochesee Landing. Photo subjects include grading, track laying machines, concrete mixers, pile drivers, logging camps, "track camps," skidders, lumber schooners, steamboats, draw-span and fixed-span bridges. The album also includes many photographs of railroad employees and workers, including Hungarian and Bulgarian workers.
