The Online Catalog allows searching and browsing of information about the Florida State Archives’ holdings of over 48,000 cubic feet of state and local government records and historical manuscripts. The catalog provides descriptions of over 3,400 collections and lists the contents of containers and folders in many of those collections. Biographical/Historical:     The 1985 Growth Management Act required that each county and municipal government adopt a local comprehensive plan consistent with regional and state plans; established a process for the state to approve local plans and amendments; required plan content including future land use maps, capital improvement elements, and others; created formal state administrative hearings for challenges and sanctions for noncompliance, and more.

    Local governments submitted their draft plans to the Department of Community Affairs for review and certification. Other state agencies, such as the Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Transportation, and Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, provided comments as necessary. The non-profit growth advocacy organization 1000 Friends of Florida also reviewed the plans for compliance and provided feedback.

    Created in 1986 as a government watchdog, 1000 Friends of Florida is a statewide public interest group dedicated to the successful implementation of growth management legislation. Its mission is to promote sustainable and equitable communities with affordable housing choices and transportation alternatives, while also working to protect natural lands and resources. 1000 Friends works with Florida's citizens, the Legislature, and the courts to promote sound public policy on growth and development issues.

Summary:     This collection contains materials created by the 1000 Friends of Florida during their reviews of county comprehensive plans for compliance with standards outlined in the 1985 Growth Management Act. The records include copies of draft comprehensive plans with comments, press releases summarizing review findings and recommendations, and county alerts to local 1000 Friends members announcing review completion and encouraging attendance of public meetings regarding the draft comprehensive plans.

    The collection does not include materials for Bay, Bradford, Calhoun, Charlotte, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Hamilton, Hardee, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Liberty, Madison, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Putnam, Sumter, Taylor, Union, or Washington counties.
