Biographical/Historical:     In 1967, the Florida Legislature created the Bureau of Law Enforcement by combining the Florida Sheriff's Bureau, the State Board of Health's Narcotics Bureau, and the criminal law investigative duties of the Attorney General (Chapter 67-2207, Laws of Florida). The Bureau became the Department of Law Enforcement in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws); reorganized in 1974 as the Department of Criminal Law Enforcement (Ch. 74-386, Laws); and reverted to the Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in 1978 (Ch. 78-347, Laws). The FDLE investigates criminal law violations; conducts investigations into the execution and enforcement of laws relating to organized crime, racketeering, vice, rioting or inciting to riot, and insurrection; investigates the misconduct of public officials and employees and members of public authorities that are subject to removal or suspension by the Governor. It maintains a Criminal Justice Information System which records and transmits information on criminals for use by government agencies. It provides investigative support for local and state law enforcement agencies, certifies training schools, and sets standards for criminal justice enforcement officers.

The Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys opened as the Florida State Reform School in January 1900 under the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions. It was a state operated high-risk residential commitment facility for male youth aged 13 to 21 who were committed by the Court. Located in Marianna (Jackson County), the school operated with segregated campuses for white and Black students until 1966. In 1914, its name changed to the Florida Industrial School for Boys, then to the Florida School for Boys in 1957. From 1967 until its closure in 2011, the school was called the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in honor of its first superintendent.

Summary:     This series consists of architectural records documenting various structural aspects of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida. The series includes a map of the entire campus (1963), plans for a new vocational facility (1989), and an offsite sanitary sewer plan for the Jackson Juvenile Offender Center (1999).

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) acquired the Dozier School for Boys architectural drawings in the course of their investigation into allegations of abuse at the school.
