Biographical/Historical:     The United States General Land Office was established in 1812 to survey and manage the public lands of the federal government.  In 1824, the post of Surveyor General of the United States for the Territory of Florida was established to survey the public lands in Florida, using a township and range system with the base and meridian lines beginning at Tallahassee.

The selling of the surveyed federal lands began in Florida in 1825.  The Florida District General Land Offices were responsible for the handling of claims made for virgin and unsettled federal public lands.      The federal land offices in Florida were closed in 1907 and their records transferred to the State Land Office and the Commissioner of Agriculture (1907, Ch. 5611, Laws of Florida).

Summary:     The series consists of three registers of tracts purchased in the Territory of Florida from 1825 to 1900. These registers document the public land sales recorded by the Receiver of the United States Land Office at Tallahassee.  The register contains a description of each tract, rate per acre, total amount paid, name of purchaser, date of sale, receipt and certificate number, and the name and date of the land patent.

The first two sets of registers are for Tallahassee and date 1825 to 1899 and 1834 to 1900. The third is a single page from a register for Gainesville, dated January 28, 1898.
