Biographical/Historical:     The City of Fort Pierce was incorporated in 1901 in St. Lucie County. The settlement was originally established as a military base in 1838 during the Second Seminole War, but was abandoned in 1842 and burned down. The town grew after 1915, courtesy of the railroad. The city returned to its military roots during World War II when it was partially converted into a Navy base for SEAL training.

The city charter was abolished and recreated in 1957, but Fort Pierce faced economical decline in the decades following the war. Considerable efforts were made to revitalize the city and its infrastructure in the 1990s. Today, the city and port of Fort Pierce are supported by robust fishing and tourism industries.

Summary:     This collection consists of records produced in the establishment and continued development of the city and port of Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. Materials include land surveys, environmental studies, aerial maps, correspondence, and draft legislation regarding the re-establishment of the city in 1956 and subsequent projects to build roads and bridges in 1985.
