Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Education in 1969 (Chapter 69-106, Laws of Florida). It carries out the policies and duties authorized by law or by the State Board of Education. The department assumed the responsibilities of the State Department of Education (Ch. 19355, Laws) and its predecessor, the Department of Public Instruction (Ch. 1686, Laws). Since 1869, these education departments have supervised public education, from kindergarten to college, in Florida.

The mission of the Office of Educational Facilities, within the Department of Education's Division of Finance and Operations, is to provide technical support and information for all issues related to educational facilities planning, funding, construction and operations throughout Florida's education system. It is responsible for the development and evaluation of annual performance and productivity standards of school district educational facilities.

Summary:     This series contains files created and maintained by the Department of Education's Office of Educational Facilities that document its role in developing and reviewing guidelines for the improvement of Florida's educational system. The series documents the office's involvement in designing Safe School Guidelines and State Prototype Primary Learning Centers, as well as its cooperation with outside agencies in developing those projects. The types of records include guideline drafts, construction documents, meeting materials, correspondence, and project proposals.
