Biographical/Historical:     On February 20, 1864, Confederate and Union forces clashed at the Battle of Olustee, Florida's largest Civil War battle that resulted in a Confederate victory. In 1897, at a convention of the Florida division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), member Laura N. Whitner presented a resolution for the marking of the battlefield. The resolution passed and Whitner, as chairman of the UDC's Olustee monument committee, petitioned the State Legislature for funds. In 1899, the legislature appropriated funds and established a commission to oversee construction of the monument. In 1912, the monument was completed and the Olustee battlefield became Florida's first historic site, although the UDC administered the memorial until 1949. Whitner was Custodian of the Olustee Battlefield Memorial until her death in 1924.

Summary:     This collection contains the scrapbook created and maintained by Laura N. Whitner during her time as Custodian of Olustee Battlefield Memorial for the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The scrapbook contains extensive documentation relating to the development and maintenance of the memorial, including landscaping and the construction of a fence and driveway. The types of records in the scrapbook include photographs, news clippings, specifications, meeting minutes in which the UDC discussed the monument, financial documents, correspondence, and Whitner's update reports to the UDC. There are also loose materials, including bank statements, a May 1923 Florida Senate Calendar, and 1929 editorials about Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.
