Biographical/Historical:     Thomas LeRoy Collins Jr. (1934-2010), the son of former Florida Governor LeRoy Collins, was a United States Navy officer, businessman, and political figure. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956 and served in the Navy and Navy Reserve for 34 years, retiring as a rear admiral. His civilian career was in the high-tech financial services and real estate industries and spanned 36 years. In 2006, Collins ran in the U.S. Senate Republican primary for Florida in but lost to U.S. Representative Katherine Harris. Then newly-elected Governor Charlie Crist appointed Collins as Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs. Collins died on July 29, 2010 in Tampa, Florida.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a letter from LeRoy Collins, Jr. to Wendell W. Powell in St. Augustine, Florida, dated May 26, 1998. In it, Collins discusses his possible candidacy for the United States Senate Republican nomination and his reluctance to accept it. He also discusses his father's U.S. Senate campaign in 1968, his subsequent defeat, and the process by which he self-published "Forerunners Courageous: Stories of Frontier Florida" in 1971.
