Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature's Environmental Reorganization Act of 1993 created the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), merging the former Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Regulation (Chapter 93-213, Laws of Florida). The Department's mission is to protect, conserve and manage Florida's environment and natural resources. Its responsibilities include management and protection of Florida's marine resources, especially endangered species and their habitats; protection, restoration and management of environmentally important lands and their ecosystems; parks and recreation; water management; and pollution control and environmental protection.

Summary:     This series contains records created and maintained by the Department of Environmental Regulation prior to its merger with the Department of Natural Resources. The records document the Department's contribution to large-scale projects involving the Suwannee River, the Transgulf Pipeline, several east coast public works projects and the Canal Authority of the State of Florida. The Department of Environmental Regulation provided technical information and specialized reviews related to the potential environmental impacts of these projects. The types of records include environmental studies and potential impact reports, project reviews and background documentation from federal agencies, contractor proposals, operational plans, and inter-agency and federal correspondence.
